Iryna's Story

When Iryna Lytvynets fled the war in Ukraine with her two children, she arrived in Frederick, Maryland, seeking safety and stability. With no family nearby, she faced many challenges—finding a well-paying job, securing housing, and adjusting to life in a new country. But one of the biggest obstacles was transportation.

“I lived on a farm where there was no public transportation,” Iryna recalls. “I bought a bicycle, but the roads weren’t safe, especially with two children. Simple tasks like grocery shopping or taking my child to school became daily struggles.”

A friend who had received a vehicle through the Pathway to Transportation program recommended she apply. Through United Way of Frederick County and Second Chances Garage, Iryna found life-changing support. While waiting for a vehicle, Iryna used Ride United Network (RUN), which provided her with approximately 60 free rides, covering 112 miles. This service saved her an estimated $740.25, allowing her to take her children to school, get groceries, and attend important appointments without the burden of unreliable transportation.

Just in time for the holidays, she received the news—she was getting a car. The vehicle provided her with the freedom and stability she needed to continue building a secure future for her family. Now, Iryna shares her story with friends and colleagues, encouraging others to seek the same support that helped her. With determination and the right community resources, she turned a difficult situation into a fresh start.

Iryna’s journey from transportation struggles to newfound independence highlights the impact of United Way of Frederick County's programs in helping individuals overcome barriers and move toward financial stability.
